shortly before the turn of the year 2017/18, my friend jan müller wrote me an e-mail: »dear martin, i ll send you the new album of my band ›dirty dishes‹ now. the album is titled ›kabinett von papen‹. it is a concept album, which has the third-last government cabinet of the weimar republic as a subject. so, please tell me how you see it – whatever your verdict, i ll use it as an incentive to put my mind and body in the service of global pop culture even more so in the future«.

following on from the critically acclaimed penya investigations cassettes and the 12inch acelere ep, afro-latin-electronic collective penya conclude an intensely creative period with a long player collection of tracks super liminal. liminal an in-between state references the transitional process the four piece band entered during a series of self-produced recording sessions held at penyas multi-instrumentalist magnus pis home studio between march 2016 and may 2017. penyas percussive and futuristic afro-latin sound also owes its genesis to the concept of liminality: the threshold of disorientation occurring during ritual practices. penya s hypnotic groovescapes, led by jim lem s bata drumming,ancient chants, sung by lilli elina, dubbed-out improvisations on trombone by viva msimangand lo-fi electronic production by magnus p.i create a sound that has garnered significant support on bbc 6 music via tom ravenscroft, worldwide fm via gilles peterson, on bbc radio 3s late junction, as well as being praised by a host of producers including dj khalab, will lv, dj jose marquez and dengue dengue dengue. penya s energised and engaging live show has also toured across uk festivals this summer, including brainchild, wilderness, farmfest and big love.

in collaboration with aniara records sankt goran presents an old swedish release that has been released as promo only in 1999. its a release called slobban by a late 90s trio of jens johansson, peter gustafsson and carl magnus ernström from falun in the woods of dalarna, two hours north of stockholm. almost classic detroit techno tracks with some jazzy influences from these guys that have been playing around and tweeking their deep bass nine, tb-303, korg dw8000 and yamaha dx7 & dx10, sprinkling some samples on top with the casio fz-10m since 1994. the peepz of aniara were so impressed by this obscure record that they found it essential to get a small run back avaialble for the many vinyl heads around. vinyl only release of these great swedish techno tracks somehow in the vein of the breakthrough tracks of aril brihka. nice one!

the second tape on legowelt s nightwind records cassette series. through his remote viewing powers danny wolfers channeled the music of saab knutson of faroe islands circa 1993. 60 minutes of nordic ambient with a disturbing undertone of dark melancholia with vague notions of distant happiness. saab knutson is a man with many issues, but on the faroe islands there is no time for issues. to stay of sound mind, saab plays his synthesizers in the few spare hours he manages to find, unmistakenly influenced by faroe s spellbinding landscapes and grim climate. though danny has never been to the islands he has a definite puzzling calling to them, a luring force, so to speak. hopefully he will sell enough saab knutson albums so he can fund an expedition and find out more about this mysterious destiny... played on yamaha dx100, roland jx3p, alpha juno 2, emu 16 bit digital sampling keyboard. ruby metallic cassette tape in luxurious faux plastic case

is it balearic continue a very fine run of form, with another essential 12 from newcomer aihki, featuring a great rework from canadas hottest disco export eddie c! aihki is a helsinki based duo consisting of magnus blomkvist & tuomas soppela. tuomas and magnus met one dark day at the local zoo engaging in some reindeer spotting. both magnus and tuomas had an enormous love for reindeers and folk music so they decided to form aihki. after extensive crate digging and an endless amount of guitar lessons their first ep was ready. inspired by the bright summer nights and the equally dark winters in the nordic region the sound differs a bit from the traditional balearica. besides aihki, tuomas has the estupido machine and magnus run the nerd network club nights in helsinki. another fine package from iib!

after netsky, kg, break and nymfo smashed some belgian dance classics by original artists shameboy, buscemi, ultrasonic7 and magnus, a few more d&b hotshots step to the plate.
blame gets the opportunity to rework his favorite tune of all time, the ultimate rave track >anasthasia< by t99. meanwhile men of the moment fred v & grafix add some 21st century flavour to >camargue<, one of many charttopping hits by the legend that is cj bolland.
with support from netsky, london electricity, d-minds and fabio among others and a forthcoming upload by ukf, the future looks bright for these badboys.

after releasing numerous classics such as novamens >lies< (with mr.pauli), the hasbeens >make the world go away< (with alden tyrell) and dreamdiscos >take me home<, the >dose< is back with another haunting solo lp on strangelife records. and this might very well be overdoses magnus opus so far. beautifull filmic melodies and tr808 beats tell us stories where charles bronson and john carpenter deal with sopranos mobstyle adventures somewhere in a cold war 70s timeframe. tragic, defeatistic drama only overdose can deliver!

when he isnt busy touring and recording with various artists as a session drummer (most recently with one beyonce knowles) guillaume jambel aka giom djs and produces deep house music. with only a handful of releases and remixes under his belt on labels such as amenti music, black cherry, tango, eight tracks and aroma its obvious that he is eager not too to spread himself too thinly. this makes us even more privileged to get him onto ornate music. and he certainly doesnt disappoint on blue matter ep which kicks of with bring down the walls a deep house disco builder promoting us to... you guessed it bring down the walls. with a metro area style bass line, warm keys and popping percussion this is bound to make you do exactly thatàin fact it should probably come with a public health warning. i know you were right, probably not something we say very often but here giom says it like he means with a tough kick drum, sweet seductive female vocal, bubbling bassline and a whole heap of other good stuff thrown into the mixer. this phat slab of deep house will brighten up the cloudiest of days, have a listen im sure you ll agree. hailing from brighton c soul are magnus asberg (head honcho of on the house records) and jimmy day. they have appeared on labels such as diy discs, suspect package and have also collaborated with house music legend robert owens on german label plastic city. for c souls on the house remix of i know you were right they strip it right down to the bone and produce a haunting, electronic house music rework. you know we were right!

blockhead drop the æfunky soul sampler just in time for the summer months featuring some top notch names. australias d-t3ch hits the spot with æswingin for the fences with many djs charting and playing this 1 from the ep. magnus wedberg hails from sweden and has recorded for lables like black vinyl & groove baby. æbrooklyn has had support from the inland knights.the title track from the ep comes from scotlands craig hamilton having had tracks out on tango / greenhouse & flatpack traxx etc. æfunky soul is a wicked rework of the james brown classic, purple musics jamie lewis has picked the track for his new mix cd dj support from giom / dj heather etc. rounding things off we have singapores #1 dj kane ian who takes things a bit techier and finishes the ep rather nicely
